PNJ Owner Rebrands as USA Today Company

Gannett Co., Inc., one of the nation’s largest news publishers, today announced it will change its name to USA TODAY Co., Inc., effective Nov. 18, adopting the name of its most recognized masthead, USA TODAY. Gannett owns the Pensacola News Journal. 

SPIN: The new corporate identity and name change leverages the power of the newspaper that brought America together by promoting understanding and fostering unity with a focus on being the trusted digital platform that connects audiences across the country. The Company’s common stock will begin trading under the ticker symbol TDAY on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as of November 18. 

  • This announcement coincides with the launch of USA TODAY’s editorial initiative, USA 250, which honors the 250th birthday of America by creating content that recognizes the country’s past, while celebrating its future, and exploring the beauty of our nation. 

“As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation, we also honor the legacy of the newspaper that has focused on uniting America as we evolve to be the platform that powers its voice,” said Mike Reed, Chief Executive Officer & Chairman of the Company.

Reality Check

Gannett purchased the Pensacola News Journal from Perry Publications for $15.5 million on July 1, 1969.

According to its Statement of Ownership, Management and Circulation, dated Oct. 1, 2025, the News Journal’s average press run for the previous 12 months was 4,825; only 3,474 were paid distribution.

  • The Escambia County subscriptions averaged only 2,183, and counter sales averaged 305 copies.

On Friday, July 25, 2025, the PNJ had a new print run of 3,350 copies. Only 1,697 were paid subscriptions in Escambia County. Click to enlarge report.
