PNJ points our Sunshine violation

The daily newspaper noticed the same slip we did by Escambia Board school board member Claudia Brown-Curry at this week’s board meeting. Curry said that she and fellow board member Jeff Bergosh had talked privately about Bergosh’s Godzilla statements. (School Board matters should be handled at public meetings)

This is a Sunshine violation. Curry should have had that discussion publicly – as Marie Young and the Escambia County commission did last week on Comm. Mike Whitehead’s comments in an email and newspaper article.

We’ve got to dispel this notion that elected officials are hampered by the Sunshine Law. They aren’t. They are hampered by their reluctance to speak openly and frankly about issues. They fear what the voters might do if they hear what their representatives really think.
