The paper says that the Sheriff “should initiate a full-scale review of his and his department’s handling of a horrific incident that left an innocent woman with severe wounds after being bitten by an out-of-control police dog.”
The editorial labels the response by Sgt. Ted Roy, ESCO spokesman, as “callous at best.” The paper goes as far as to say former Sheriff Ron McNesby would have handled the incident better. McNesby “would have been out there speaking to the media and to the public if this had happened on his watch.”
The editorial ends with these two scathing sentences: “This is Morgan’s first serious crisis as leader of the Escambia Sheriff’s Office. At the moment, he’s blowing it.”
While this editorial was being posted, Sheriff Morgan was been interviewed by PNJ reporter Louis Cooper. Cooper’s simple Q&A is also posted on pnj.com. Sheriff Morgan says his department doesn’t know how the dog got out of the squad car. That his deputy did not use his remote door opener.
