Zach Robbins didn’t sing in front of anyone until his senior year of high school. He’d been writing music secretly since middle school, too nervous to perform for anyone outside his brothers. Then, he says, he decided to “rip the band aid off.” Today he’s a musician, poet, and author featured in Inweekly’s poet edition, and he’s about to release an album a decade in the making.
Robbins grew up on two very different musical diets. His mom leaned toward alternative and electronic pop; his dad raised him on classic rock. That split taste shows up in his sound now, an electronic-rock hybrid he’s been chasing since he first conceived his upcoming record.
“I never am afraid to try to aim for crazy dreams. It’s a blessing and a curse — it’s disappointing at times, but also really fulfilling.”
The album is called Earth, and it’s set to drop on Earth Day, April 22, 2027. Robbins says he’s had the concept in mind for about a decade but couldn’t pull it off until he teamed up with Brendan, owner of Colt Soul Records, who also plays guitar, drums, and bass on the new tracks. The two have collaborated remotely since 2022, Robbins in Pensacola and Brendan in the Boston area, first through Brendan’s side project Faded Ronin, then on Robbins’s own material.
Robbins sees himself as part of a broader revival. He and Brendan have talked about how the local music scene feels like it’s blossoming again, and Robbins says building community around his small but loyal fan base matters as much to him as the music itself.
His mission statement is simple: make art. “It doesn’t matter what you do,” he says, “just do some kind of art, because it’s really therapeutic and I think it’s a healthy thing to do.”
