Podcast: Evers looking at Congressional race

State Senator Greg Evers said yesterday on “Pensacola Speaks” that his seriously looking at running for Congress.

“We keep all options open, but yes, we’re definitely looking at that very seriously,” said Evers. “Keeping in mind, this all hinges on what Jeff does. If Jeff does not run for Senate, then I will not be running for his office.”

What would make him a good Congressman?

Evers said, “Well, what made me a good representative? What made me a good senator? I believe that to being in touch with the people, and being able to talk with the voters, and take their wishes to Washington.”

I pointed out that because of his state senate district covering Escambia, Santa Rosa and some of Okaloosa counties that he was positioned geographically pretty well for the congressional district.

“Actually before we did the redistricting, I represented all those people in Walton, and Washington and Holmes County,” he said. “Since that time I’ve been representing all the folks all the way down to the coastline. Before redistricting, I came down to Ten Mile Road, or Kingsville Road over there, but since that time I have represented all the people. They voted for me at least twice, if not eight times.”

Evers isn’t worried about others getting into the race.

“I know there’s a lot of folks out there that want to run for Congress,” he said. “I spoke with someone today that mentioned a lot of names, and the thing about it is, if one is going to run, you’re better off if a hundred run. I welcome all,”

I have heard that Evers was considering a run for Santa Rosa County sheriff.

Is he? The state senator was evasive.

Evers: “Because of the fact that I have been so involved with the criminal justice arena, and the changes that I was trying to make to Department of Correction, I can’t say that I haven’t thought about it, I can’t say that I haven’t looked at it, but to physically go out and do research on it, I have not done that, no. “
