Political buzz

One of the GOP candidates for Escambia County Superintendent of Schools will be dropping out of the race today. I’ve been able to confirm it directly, but you can expect an announcement today or tomorrow.

West Florida Hospital/Baptist marriage is still one or two weeks away…I almost hate to write this, because that deal is very sensitive. Two years ago, I was accused of killing the first merger talks by printing something about it.

Dave Murzin and Clay Ford may have Democratic opponents from the African-American community this fall. There are several meetings happening around town on the subject. Murzin is tough to beat. Ford could be upset if there is a heavy voter turnout in the black community.

Marie Young is attracting lots of opponents. She still appears to be unbeatable, but it’s early. District 3 has only had two commissioners since it was redistricted to be a minority district – Willie Junior and Marie Young. The district has improved little under either one’s leadership.

GOP big contributors are looking for someone else to support other than Ron McNesby for sheriff. Some may find ways to get money to challenger David Morgan. It’s still an uphill battle to defeat Teflon Ron.

There is a persistent rumor that George Touart is considering a run for county commission. Talks of him suing the county have died down, but don’t rule that out either.
