Poverty still plagues Escambia County

A new U.S. Census Bureau’s 5-year American Community Survey released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau shows 23.7 percent of children under age 18 in Escambia County live below the poverty level.

Living Below Poverty Level – 2009 survey
Related children under 18 years: 23.7% (Florida:18%) (USA:18.2%)

We have no significant improvement since the 2005 survey, especially in the under 5 age group:
Related children under 18 years 24.0% (Florida:17.6%) (USA:18.2%)
Related children under 5 years 28.2% (Florida:20.5%) (USA:21.5%)
Related children 5 to 17 years 22.3% (Florida:16.4%) (USA:16.9%)

This is why the Backpack Club is so critical.
