ANALYSIS: YET ANOTHER TWIST MURDAUGH FAMILY SAGA
BRAD GARRETT, ABC NEWS CRIME & TERRORISM ANALYST, WASHINGTON
And you thought all of the twists and turns were played out! For weeks we watched the double homicide trial of Alex Murdaugh, accused of brutally murdering his wife and son Paul on the family’s property, which ended with his conviction. But now it’s coming to light that during the murder investigation, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division found evidence that another death possibly connected to the Murdaughs and originally ruled a hit and run in 2015, was actually a homicide.
The bottom line is that because of the investigation into the shooting deaths of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh, the murder of Stephen Smith now may get solved. A wealthy, established family in the rural south; five deaths in six years linked to the family in some form; and the millions of dollars stolen by Alex Murdaugh from his law firm and clients all really do create a true crime saga that was made for television. It’s not the first, and it definitely won’t be the last.
