Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine is expected to strengthen and become Hurricane Helene.. Escambia County meteorologist Scottlin Williams shared the latest info on the storm.
Why is it called “Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine?”
Scottlin Williams: “Over the past several years or a couple of years, people may have noticed this potential tropical cyclone becoming a thing, and that just allows for the National Hurricane Center to put out a cone, even though it’s not yet a named storm.”
As of 7 a.m.:
“So potential tropical Cyclone nine, it’s been battling some shear. So if you look at it on satellite, it’s still asymmetrical, but it still should be a tropical storm.
Soon we’ll see if this short-term struggle affects peak intensity in the Gulf, but I will say hurricane models and global models, they are still very aggressive on the peak intensity of the system.
Once it starts to strengthen, it may do so quickly. So as of right now, looking at models, looking at guidance, it seems to be honing in on the Big Bend area.”
