Renovated downtown library, instead of new

The daily newspaper reports that there will be no new downtown Pensacola library built if the Pensacola City Council approves the advisory board’s recommendation to renovate instead.

The renovated library will have a 16,000-square-foot addition built where the old Spring St. fire station currently stands. When the renovation is finished, the downtown library will be 44,000 sq. ft. —which is great. The renovation helps the City get the most of its $6-million of LOST money that it has been saving since 1999 for the project.

Actually the original LOST budget for the new library was $4 million in 1999. When the last extension of the LOST was passed–I think it was 2006– another $2 million was added.

Yes, things move a much slower speed in Pensacola.
