Rev. John Powell passes away

Rev. John Powell, a steadfast pillar of the Pensacola community and founder of Truth for Youth, has passed away while fighting to recover from a heart attack that struck him earlier this week.

Over three decades, the reverend’s vision evolved into one of the area’s most influential youth development programs.

Truth for Youth served children and families throughout Pensacola, focusing primarily on youth ages 6 to 16 from underserved communities. The organization provided comprehensive educational support through after-school tutoring and mentoring programs, helping students improve academically while building confidence. Beyond academics, Powell’s initiative offered recreational activities, including sports, arts workshops, and cultural events that encourage healthy development and creativity.

Rev. Powell’s military background significantly influenced his mentorship approach, emphasizing structure, discipline, and leadership development. His programs fostered teamwork, resilience, and civic responsibility, while creating safe havens where young people could gather after school and during the summer months, thereby reducing their exposure to negative influences.

His collaborative approach set new standards for community engagement in the region. Working closely with local schools, churches, and civic organizations, he expanded the reach of youth programming.

Rev. Powell’s work was frequently cited as a model for community-driven youth development solutions.
