Saengar Theatre spurs downtown economy with record year

Press Release: In a year frought with high unemployment and rising costs for everyday expenses, the Saenger Theatre saw 102,644 attendees come through her doors in 2012 (19 percent increase over 2011), and gross box office sales of $2.4 million dollars (17 percent increase).

Much of the increase can be attributed to a record-setting 15 touring concerts including double sold-out shows for comedians Daniel Tosh and Jerry Seinfeld, concerts that included rock band Creed, Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt, and Gordon Lightfoot among others, and a sold out Broadway season. Another factor in the increase in attendance was the successful Saenger Classic Movie Series that was hosted over the summer and the holiday season.

“The Saenger Theatre has always been subject to the ebb and flow of the touring entertainment industry, but the strong support of our community has allowed us to remain competitive in this soft economy,” said Doug Lee, General Manager of the Saenger Theatre.

According to the Arts and Economic Prosperity Calculator by the Americans for the Arts (www.americansforthearts.org), the Saenger Theatre and her audiences have a total local economic impact of $3,468,884 with 100 full-time equivalent jobs for the community.
