Sarasota jumpstarts economy

Sarasota County wants to use their local option sales tax dollars to create 900 jobs by moving ahead on its public works projects. To make it happen they needed the voters to give the bonding authority. With results from all 157 precincts now counted, voters have overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure intended to stimulate the economy.

On Tuesday, the Sarasota Herald Tribune reports: ” By 68.63 percent, voters approved a $300 million bond issue to jump start road, utility and other county construction projects. The money would come from a 1 percent sales tax previously approved by voters. The measure is intended to create more jobs and boost the local economy, which became sluggish with a downturn in the real estate market.”
