Sarasota takes hiring locals seriously

I believe that public works projects can help a local economy in tough times, especially if they hire local workers. The payroll dollars stay in this community.

Sarasota Housing Authority has a $125-million redevelopment project. In an agreement with the housing authority, the developer promised to hire 30-percent minority business enterprise contractors and try to hire those contractors locally if possible. Maryland-based Clark Construction was to hire local workers, but did not. They have been fired from the contract.

We need to have the same policies here, even when allow out-of-town contractors and subcontractors to get the contracts.
