SCAPE plan for Pensacola waterfront on track

Terry Horne, executive director for the Center for Civic Engagement, gave the crowd at the CivicCon event on Monday an update on SCAPE project to revitalize Pensacola’s waterfront.

For first half of this year, New York City-based urban design firm SCAPE worked to come up with a plan to create a more pedestrian-friendly downtown core—a space where walkers and cyclists feel as comfortable as vehicular drivers—as well as a landscape that allows for access to Pensacola Bay.

In July, the Pensacola City Council voted to refinance $40 million in old debt, as well as to borrow an additional $17.7 million to fund the projects in the plan.

Horne told the CivicCon crowd that the council will hold a workshop as the Community Redevelopment Agency in January to prioritize the projects. He added, “The projects will make downtown more vibrant than what we’ve seen so far.”
