School Board may be in charge of Escambia Public School District

Pssst, Superintendent Malcolm Thomas doesn’t want anyone to know this, but Tuesday’s vote to switch to an appointed superintendent may have put the school board in charge of the district operations.

Marion County passed an appointed referendum on Nov. 6. The Marion County School Board’s attorney, Paul Gibb, researched the issue and determined the School Board is now in charge of day-to-day operations of the district. (Of course, our school board had no such foresight to do any research.)

Gibbs has written Attorney General Pam Bondi and asked whether the superintendent can be removed from office immediately. He cited a 1967 state attorney general opinion that stated that “the superintendent serves only until the board has a qualified and duly appointed replacement.”
