School Board to discuss firing Superintendent Smith

The Escambia County School Board has on its agenda an item to approve to “begin discussions on terminating Superintendent Smith’s contract.” He still has two more years on his contract.

Smith took over from Malcolm Thomas near the end of the first semester of the 2020-21 school year. He had to deal with the Covid pandemic most of his first full year (2021-22), using many of the holdovers from the Thomas era.

I’ve received several phone calls and texts questioning the board’s wisdom in undermining Smith so early in the school year.

This will be a meeting to watch.
