School District Workshop

With students still enjoying the last remnants of summer, The Escambia County School Board will hold its regular workshop tomorrow morning. In addition to normal business, the board will hear updates from two charter schools—A.A. Dixon and Newpoint Academy—and take a look at the Florida School Board Association’s 2013 legislative platform.

A.A. Dixon Charter School of Excellence will present its monthly academic report to the school board. The charter is preparing to approach the state of Florida for a waiver, which would allow it to continue operating despite two years of inadequate FCAT performances.

Officials with Dixon will report to the district that 200 employees and volunteers have put in thousands of hours readying the facility for the school year. Orientation is Aug. 17.

The school will also detail the district regarding its curriculum. And a new name: tentatively A.A. Dixon School of the Arts.

Newpoint Academy officials will be reporting to the district as well. The school will outline efforts to better academic performance, specifically reading and writing; physical education classes will now include a writing component.

Tomorrow’s school board workshop begins at 8 a.m. The workshop is held at the district’s facility at 30 E. Texar Dr.
