School property remains vacant

NorthEscambia reports the Carver/Century K-8 School, which the school district closed in May 2009, remains empty. After two years, the Escambia County School District has been unable to find a buyer for the facility. Read more.

The School District needs a better plan for dealing with its abandoned schools. Brownsville Middle is still unsold and has been become a target for vandals. The former district headquarters on Garden St. is also vacant. Three more schools will be shutdown this year – Hallmark, Allie Yniestra and Spencer Bibbs. And there is talk Lincoln Park may be added to the list.

Meanwhile the community needs community centers. We need a plan…and we can’t rely on the Superintendent of Schools to develop it alone. The County, City and community leaders need to step forward and decide how these facilities can best be used for the taxpayers who paid for them.
