SETSCO announces classes starting in August

Rosters are filling at the Southeastern Teen Shakespeare Company for this fall’s menu of Shakespeare-related classes. In addition to acting, the conservatory offers courses in stage combat, improvisation, monologue performance, and the music in Shakespeare’s plays. Classes are open to students as young as nine and include options for adults. There are even a classes just for home schoolers.

“We’re excited for our fall round of classes,” said director Michelle Hancock. “There’s so much about Shakespeare to delve into – the humor, the tragedy, and, of course, the stage combat. Helping kids discover the fun in the greatest plays ever written is what we’re all about.”

One of Ms. Hancock’s favorite classes to teach is Shakespeare’s Language. “We learn how to break down the poetic line and decipher the clues Shakespeare imbedded in the text to create character and understand the story. Then, we use that knowledge to play scenes, so it’s partly academic and partly performance, which makes it both fun and fulfilling.”

Classes begin August 22. Information about classes can be found at www.setsco.org/classes-and-camps. Discounts are available for those who register early.

The Southeastern Teen Shakespeare Company is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing citizens of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties with instruction and performance opportunities that lead to their significant growth as artists, as community members, and as human beings.
