Simmons: Jail infirmary takes care of all 1,483 prisoners, regardless where housed

Jail Bars
Assistant County Administrator Chip Simmons called to clarify that the jail infirmary at the Escambia County Main Jail takes care of medical issues of all the prisoners, regardless if they are housed outside of the county.

He said the jails in Santa Rosa and Walton counties will not take an prisoners if they have health issues. Sick inmates at the county’s road camp are also taken to the jail infirmary at the main jail.

Today, the total inmate population, including those at the road camp and jails in Santa Rosa and Walton counties is 1,483.

Breakdown:

Main Jail 805
Main Jail prisoners housed at Work Release 211
Main Jail prisoners housed at Road Camp 61
Santa Rosa County jail 75
Walton County jail 209

Total Main Jail prisoners – all locations: 1,361

Road Camp prisoners: 122

The question remains what has caused the steep pike in jail deaths.

The DOJ statistician says multiple deaths aren’t unusual for jail populations over 1,500. However, the inmate population isn’t appreciably different from 2013. The DOJ letter had 1,322 prisoners, which excluded road camp.

The Total Main Jail prisoners – all locations today is only 39 more than the snapchat given by DOJ.
