Souls to the Polls

“Souls to the Polls” early voting event Sunday, Oct. 24

Come be a part of the 2010 “Pastors Pushing People to the Polls—Souls to the Polls” early voting event at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, October 24, 2010 in downtown Pensacola.

About 20 pastors and churches in Escambia County are ending their church services early, so their congregations can vote early at the Souls to the Polls event.

Church members will be taken by carpool or church buses to the corner of Palafox and Government streets. They will gather in Ferdinand Plaza and then will march one block to the Supervisor of Elections Office, 213 Palafox St., to cast a vote for the candidates of their choice.

Food and drinks will be provided free of charge at Ferdinand Plaza at the corner of Palafox and Government streets throughout the Souls to the Polls event.

As leaders in the community, the Pensacola pastors are committed to the Souls to the Polls event and are aware of obstacles to voting that affect us all. Many people in our community have the desire to vote but may not have accessibility to their polling sites, because of a lack of transportation and other factors.

This effort by the pastors was initiated in 2008 and drew thousands to early vote. Churches will provide transportation not only at the kickoff event at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, October 24, but also offer rides to voters to the early voting sites from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. the entire week of October 24 to October 30.

This event honors the many brave Americans who have spoken out for this right and fought and died to allow us the privilege to vote. It is not only our right, but our responsibility, so please join us in this important election.
