Spring Cleaning

As part of the Great American Cleanup, local residents are invited to help tidy up the waterfront along Bayfront Parkway.

Participants will meet at the Hawkshaw Missing Children’s Memorial, across from Veterans Park, at 8:30 a.m. on March 24. The cleanup will run until 11:30 a.m.

While water will be provided, people should bring their own snacks. They should also bring along gloves, sunscreen and a hat. Close-toed shoes—that you don’t mind getting wet—should also be worn.

The Great American Cleanup is an annual drive that begins in March. Last year, more than 3.8 million volunteers in 16,500 communities took part in 30,600 events. The 2011 Cleanup resulted in the removal of 177 million pounds of litter and debris, the beautification of 177,000 acres of parks and public lands, the cleaning of 6,400 miles of rivers, lakes and shorelines as well as the planting of 166,000 trees and 1.5 million flowers and bulbs.

The 2011 effort also collected more 290 million pounds of plastic bottles; 7.9 million pounds of electronics; 13.4 million pounds of aluminum and steel; 12.1 million pounds of glass; and 807,000 scrap tires.
