Summit Recycles to Leonard Street

City of Pensacola

City Moves Recycling Drop-Off to Leonard Street—Effective Today

The Summit Boulevard recycling center closes as the city shifts to a staffed, fenced facility that slashes operating costs by 90% and tackles chronic contamination.

Starting today, May 5, Pensacola residents will find their nearest recycling drop-off at a new address: 100 W. Leonard St., the site of the city’s Sanitation Services Transfer Center. The Summit Boulevard recycling center is permanently closed.

The relocation comes after persistent problems at the Summit location, where contamination rates ran between 85 and 90 percent—sending nearly five tons of material to the Perdido Landfill every week instead of to recyclers.

“The annual operating cost will be $30,000 at the Transfer Station site compared to the current cost of $300,000. Summit’s current contamination rates are approximately 85–90%, so a secure, staffed location at a 90% decrease in operational cost is a win for everyone.”
—Mayor D.C. Reeves

Why the Move?

The Transfer Center site is fenced and staffed, giving the city tools it didn’t have on Summit Boulevard: trained staff to sort incoming material, educate residents on what goes where, and intercept contamination before it ruins entire loads. The result is cleaner recycling streams and dramatically lower operational costs.
