Survey: Pensacola voters gave Superintendent Thomas and School Board much lower ratings

The Pensacola Young Professionals’ Quality Life Survey revealed a significant drop in job performance ratings for School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas and the Escambia County School Board among Pensacola voters. The percentage of city voters that gave Thomas an excellent or good rating for job performance dropped 32 percentage points. Only 44.3 percent of the city voters were positive about his job performance.

Overall, Thomas had 51.7 percent positive rating (down 8.9 points from last year). His outside of the city limits positive rating was 53.9 percent (down 2.4 points).

The Escambia County School Board also did poorly with the city voters – dropping to a 27.4 percent positive job performance rating.  Less than one third of city voters believed the School Board was doing an excellent or good job.

Like Thomas, the School Board did better outside of the city,  improving to a 42.6 positive rating. Overall, 39 percent gave the School Board an excellent or positive rating.

City of Pensacola had positive increases for the job performances of Mayor Ashton Hayward  (up 18.7 points) and Pensacola City Council (up 7.1 points). However, only a third believed the Council was doing an excellent or good job.

For Mayor Hayward, more voters outside of the city (54.6 percent) believed he was doing an excellent or good than those who live inside the city limits (45.9 percent). For the Council, the percentages were nearly the same – City: 35.5 percent; O/S City: 33.4 percent.

The Escambia County Commission saw its job performance rating drop 3.2 points, which is within the polls margin of error (+/- 3.5 points). The majority of city and county voters believed the Commission was doing just a fair or poor job – Overall: 57.4;  City: 53.5; O/S City: 58.6
