Tampa lays off city workers

The Sarasota Herald Tribune reports that Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio announced he was laying off 100 more city workers. He also outlined a three-year plan to make 11 changes to make government more efficient. The changes are expected to save the city about $3.4 million annually.

Last June Iorio laid off 121 city workers and eliminated an additional 115 vacant, full-time positions.

This is the benefit of having a strong mayor. Meanwhile, the Pensacola City Council is studying whether to do a RFP on mixed use at the Port of Pensacola, whether to fund a statue, repairs of the Pensacola Cultural Center and Springfest, charter review and dozens of other ideas. Operative word is “study.” No workers have been laid off. No three year plan to save tax dollars has been discussed.
