Officers of the Tanyard Neighborhood Association sent an email to the media stating their association “is not against the hatchery… just the location.” They don’t want it on Bruce Beach.
The email was signed by Tanyard president Marilynn Wiggins and vice president Glorida Horning.
They wrote:
“And for the record the community was never brought to the table to ask their opinion about the location of the hatchery. We were nevered asked.. example: the “retention pond.†And we see how well that is working out.
The port is a perfect location and can still bring in tourism… it a much larger space and away from our homes.
Governor Scott even said NO MONEY WILL BE LOST to move the location. Why do so many want to cram another stinky project to our neighborhood?
We are for the CRA proposed plan of 2010. Do you see hatchery anywhere? (CRA Plan, Vol. I, page 40)”
Over the past seven years, the Hayward administration has had several run-ins with city neighborhoods. In 2013, District 3 residents protested the permitting of a Dollar store on Spanish Trail.
The next year, North Hill battled the city over a regional correction and probation center planned on the North Palafox Street.
In 2015, Longhollow and North Hill fought Mayor Hayward and his administration over a radio tower built in a conservation district. When the issue started to gain momentum, City Administrator Eric Olson tried to get North Hill president Melanie Nichols in trouble with her employer.
The past two years, the fight with city hall has been over a storage tank being built by ECUA off of North Palafox Street.
Note many of these issues started to surface as Mayor Hayward dropped his town halls in city districts.
Little wonder our survey showed less than half of city voters believe Pensacola city government is headed in the right direction.
