Tar balls on the beach

Got this email from a reader yesterday:

I went fishing on Pensacola Beach on 5-4-11, and on the gulf side of the beach, there are thousands of tar balls just under the surf. They are brownish in color and smell like oil. I just hope that NW FL. doesn’t get a hurricane. No telling how much more oil will wash up.
