Tate reported few crimes to ECSO last year

Through a public records request of the Florida Department of Education, IN got the School Environmental Safety Incident Report for the Escambia County School District for the 2009-10 school year. School administrations enter into the state database all the crime incidents that occur on their campus by category and how many were reported to law enforcement.

Tate High School entered 96 incidents into the database, but only reported 9 to Law Enforcement: 8 weapon possessions and one drug possession. Two sexual offenses and two sexual harassments were not reported to the Escambia Office Sheriff’s Office, according to the report. Of all the public high schools in Escambia County, only West Florida High reported fewer to the ECSO, but it only had 11 incidents.

The state average for reporting crime incidents to law enforcement is 50 percent. The Escambia School District only reported 32 percent of its crime incidents to law enforcement.

Across Florida, there were 72 Sexual Battery incidents reported – 81 percent to law enforcement;  1,746 Sexual Harassment incidents – 30 percent to law enforcement; and 1,341 Sex Offenses – 84 percent.  Overall percentage for sexual incidents reported to law enforcement: 54 percent.

The Escambia School District reported one Sexual Battery incident to the state – 100 percent to law enforcement;  8 Sexual Harassment incidents – 13 percent to law enforcement; and 17 Sex Offenses – 18 percent. Overall percentage for sexual incidents reported to law enforcement: 19 percent.

In fact, Escambia District  ranks in the bottom 10 percent of Florida school districts when it comes to percentage of sex offenses reported to law enforcement – for districts that had any sex offense incidents.  Only St. Johns, Jackson, Gadsden, Highlands and Columbia school districts had worse percentages.

Santa Rosa County reported no Sexual Battery incidents; 8 Sexual Harassment incidents – 25 percent to law enforcement; and 4 Sex Offenses – 75 percent.  Overall percentage reported to law enforcement: 50 percent.

Okaloosa County reported one Sexual Battery incidents – 100 percent to law enforcement; 8 Sexual Harassment incidents – 25 percent to law enforcement; and 7 Sex Offenses – 57 percent.  Overall percentage reported to law enforcement: 44 percent.
