People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have extra time to submit applications for The Arc Gateway Program for Adult Learning and Support (PALS) class to start in January 2016 at Pensacola State College. The extended deadline to apply is October 30, 2015.

PALS is a 2-year program that provides a unique opportunity for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to pursue customized post-secondary education within a college setting. The program is designed for students to prepare for the workforce, increase independence and become lifelong learners in the community. Graduates will exit the program ready to live and work independently.

PALS was created in 2014 by an appropriation from the state of Florida, and sponsored by The Arc Gateway, Inc. and State of Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities. “We are committed to the success of our students and it is our vision to be the leader in providing educational, vocational and social support for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” says Melissa Rogers, CEO of The Arc Gateway. “PALS makes this possible for all people who, otherwise, may face obstacles in pursuing this opportunity.

The curriculum is designed to meet each student’s individual needs at a variety of levels, remove barriers, and ultimately, lead to securing competitive employment and gaining independence by providing employment skills, hands-on practical work skills, life skills, self-determination and interpersonal skills. “I’m taking apart a/c units, brazing and preparing copper piping, and working right alongside other PSC students,” said Cody Long, PALS student. “With the skills I’m learning, I know I’ll be ready to get a job.”

Applications are available online at www.arc-gateway.org/PALS or by calling 850-484-1185.
