‘The Long March’

Sheriff David Morgan  set the tone for the Monday, Sept. 21 press conference.

“Now it becomes the long march,” Morgan said, referring to the weeks and months facing the community  as it recovers from Hurricane Sally. “Those of you who are not new to our community may remember Hurricane Ivan. It was years that we still had blue tarps on everyone’s homes. And so there’s never a quick recovery from this.”

Though the curfew has been lifted for Escambia County, except for Perdido Key, the sheriff said his command staff had realigned patrols to cover areas still without power and the parts of the county worst affected by the storm.

The county has shut down the Point of Distribution (POD) sites and sent the National Guard home.  However, Inweekly contacted Commissioner Lumon May who said he still has water at the Brownsville Community Center and Mercy Chef will continue to serve hot meals as long as there is a demand.

City PIO Kaycee Lagarde said a meals will be served by the Red Cross at the Bayview Park Senior from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. as long as there is a demand.

We didn’t get a report  on the job fair for the debris removal inspectors.  Inweekly passed along to Emergency Director Eric Gilmore that the hotline for the job information, 319-750-1026, hadn’t been set up for voicemail as promised. The line is working this morning.
