Tomso named new UWF VP

The University of West Florida has named Dr. Greg Tomso as vice president for academic engagement and student affairs. Tomso previously served as interim vice president for the division since January 2022, as well as chief diversity officer.

“Dr. Tomso has ably conducted the work of the division and I am pleased to appoint him as vice president,” said UWF President Martha D. Saunders. “His energy, experience and sincere devotion to students will serve the University well.”

In this role, Tomso will oversee all aspects of the division, including Career Development and Community Engagement, the Dean of Students Office, Housing and Residence Life, International Affairs, the Kugelman Honors Program, Equity and Inclusion, Student Health Services, Recreation and Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services and the Center for Academic Success, among other areas. The division provides coordinated academic support services and high-impact learning opportunities that promote academic success, professional development and civic engagement.

“UWF is a special place because we support our students in many different ways,” Tomso said. “The Division of Academic Engagement and Student Affairs surrounds our students with a culture of care while providing transformational learning experiences and a strong sense of belonging throughout our campus community. In the coming year, we will be especially focused on student mental health, resilience and wellness as we continue to adapt to the post-COVID landscape.”

Tomso has been at UWF for nearly 20 years, having served as a faculty member and chair of the department of English. Prior to his role of vice president, Tomso served as the director of UWF’s Kugelman Honors Program for five years.

Tomso holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and history from the University of Virginia and a doctorate in English from Duke University.
