UWF Resistance & Manny Diaz & Missing Zack Smith

An anonymously authored zine with a scathing critique of the University of West Florida’s presidential search process, which resulted in Manny Diaz, Jr., being named the sole finalist, has been circulating on the UWF campus. Read Protest Zine. The zine is meant to be folded, so it’s a little hard to follow. (Warning: adult language).

Food Not Bombs Has Valid Permit, But We Can’t See It

This is the news story that Pensacola City Hall keeps feeding.

For 14 years, Food Not Bombs volunteers have served meals to Pensacola’s hungry every Friday evening in Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza—a simple act of charity that required no permit, no controversy, no police involvement. Then Michael Kimberl was arrested for not immediately handing over his driver’s license, and everything changed.

The City of Pensacola gave an event permit not to Food Not Bombs but to a little-known nonprofit, Boots for Matt Berry, to distribute food from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays through March 6. Even though Food Not Bombs is not listed anywhere on the permit, Mayor Reeves told the media that it covered the nonprofit’s food distributions at MLK Plaza. But does it?

The unfortunate arrest of Michael Kimberl could have been handled with common sense: drop the charges and let the work continue. Instead, City Hall has created a mess that raises serious questions about transparency, good governance, and who this permit really serves.
