United Way and media join forces for Tornado victims

Two tornados devastated Escambia County, Florida in the span of one week. Two tornados mean more resources are needed. Local personalities from WEAR ABC-3, Cat Country 98.7, NewsRadio 1620, ESPN—Pensacola and Cumulus Media will gather on Friday, February 26 and Saturday, February 27 to raise funds. Donations given will be provided to United Way of Escambia County who will allocate funds to local agencies that support local relief efforts.

Many of the affected families do not have insurance and are low-income households. Their long-term recovery will take months and, in some cases, years. With each dollar raised, Escambia County recovery becomes that much more attainable. Friday and Saturday’s remotes will provide donors with the option to choose which tornado relief fund their money supports.

On Friday, visit the media tents outside World Market at Cordova Mall from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Cat Country 98.7’s Brent Lane is one of many media personalities who will help collect funds on Friday. He knows that the response needed during disasters involves the community coming together, saying, “Cat Country 98.7 believes in putting the community first. We work to support our community and responsibly channel funds to organizations who are directly working with affected families. I hope that our involvement will set an example for giving and supporting those who need it most after such a devastating event.”

On Saturday, Cumulus Media’s radio stations from Mobile, Pensacola and Ft. Walton Beach will broadcast live throughout the area to raise relief funds. Davey Willhoit, Vice President of Sales/Market Manager for Cumulus, explains the value of mobilizing radio stations across the Gulf Coast for the Cumulus Cares remotes. He says, “We can promote the event across all three clusters on the air of the 12 radio stations that are participating. As a result, we hope to experience high turnout from the community.” Please see the chart below for a full list of the stations, times and locations of each remote.

Last week, the live remote at Cordova Mall raised over $68,000 for Northern Escambia. Following the devastation of two tornados in the county, our community must UNITE to meet the increased need. Through two days of live remotes this weekend, let’s see if we can top last week’s total!
