Update on efforts to break school to prison pipeline, April 18

LWV Pensacola Bay Area, ACLU, Coffee Party, Escambia Youth Justice Coalition, and Escambia County School District invite the community to the fourth public forum on Monday, April 18, 2016, 5:30 pm at the J. E. Hall Center, 30 East Texar Drive, Room 160.

The panel discussion will include principles, implementation and outcomes of student discipline in Escambia County Schools. The panelists will be affiliated with the Escambia County School District. They will discuss the way school discipline is handled in each school and provide statistics on expulsion, suspension and graduation rates during the last five years.

The League’s goal is to learn what is being done as well as outcomes for the children in the County’s public schools.

Previously, panelists presented an overview of juvenile offenses as well as judicial and law enforcement processes for handling these youthful offenders. Paper Tigers, a documentary film, emphasized the importance of understanding the child’s history of trauma and adverse experiences and showed how discipline can and should be used as teaching acceptable behavior rather than as mere punishment.

There is nationwide and local concern about the connection between harsh discipline and children losing their futures into the justice system. The social and economic impacts of this problem are enormous. Come learn how Escambia County Schools are addressing this and other problems which arise from the traumatic impact of poverty and insecurity on our students.

For reservations please contact Paula Montgomery at 438 8891. Light refreshments will be available.
