The University of West Florida is expanding its cultural programming with the launch of the Gulf Coast Culture Series. This series transforms the previous Experience UWF Downtown Lecture Series into a more comprehensive exploration of regional heritage. Hosted by the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, it will examine different aspects of Gulf Coast culture through themed events throughout the academic year.
- John T. Edge, renowned food writer and host of TrueSouth on SEC Network, ESPN and Hulu, will headline the inaugural event on January 23, 2025. The presentation, “True South: A Conversation with John T. Edge,” will take place at Pensacola’s Museum of Commerce and feature Edge’s insights into how food and media shape Gulf Coast cultural identity.
“This new series reflects our commitment to fostering curiosity, creativity and compassion while deepening our community’s connection to the Gulf Coast’s diverse heritage,” says Dr. David M. Earle, dean of the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities.
Edge, who also serves as founding director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, is well-known for his work documenting Southern culture. His book “The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South” received national recognition as one of NPR’s Best Books of 2017.
- The event, sponsored by the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities and the John C. Pace Symposium Series, begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and ends with Edge’s presentation at 7 p.m. The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
