UWF named among 2011 “Great Colleges to Work For”

Press release: The University of West Florida is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to rankings by The Chronicle of Higher Education released on Monday.

The survey is based on data from nearly 44,000 survey participants at 310 institutions. UWF and Florida International University in Miami are the only two public, four-year institutions recognized in Florida.

“This recognition is great affirmation that the University of West Florida is a quality employer with a quality workforce,” said President Judith Bense. “We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff to make UWF not only a great place to earn a degree, but also to make a career.”

UWF received recognition among large universities (total graduate and undergraduate enrollment of 10,000 or more students) in the following categories: work/life balance, supervisor/department chair relationship, facilities, and workplace & security.

The “Great Colleges to Work For” survey included a two-part assessment process: a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff, and an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies and practices. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received “Great Colleges to Work For” recognition was employee feedback. To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm.

“Even in a down economy when many colleges are freezing salaries or having layoffs, employees still find good in their work,” said Jeffrey J. Selingo, The Chronicle editor. “Just like colleges market to recruit students, they are now realizing they need to do more to attract quality employees. The ‘Great Colleges to Work For’ survey is meant to help both employers and potential employees by giving them vital information about workplaces.”

UWF was previously recognized in 2008 and 2009. Now in its fourth year, the Great Colleges program has become one of the largest and most respected workplace recognition programs in the country.
