I finally received the application packets for two individuals that Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed to the University of West Florida Board of Trustees: Chris Young and Paul Bailey.
- Both took the oath of office on Feb. 12 – 11 days after the first board meeting and a month after DeSantis announced their appointments.
Chris Young took the oath of office on Feb. 12, 2025, the same day as his application to serve on the UWF Board of Trustees.
- Why he wants to serve: His mother is a retired teacher. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from UWF in 1974. “I have countless family members and friends who have obtained their degrees from UWF and otherwise may not have been able to attend a university had it not been for UWF.”
Paul Bailey also took the oath of office on Feb. 12, 2025. However, his application is dated Dec. 27, 2024.
- Bailey has never attended a public high school, college or university. He graduated from Calvary Christian Academy, Pensacola Christian College and Regent University School of Law.
All King DeSantis’ Men
Gov. DeSantis appointed five white men to the UWF Board of Trustees: Adam Kissel, Gates Garcia, Scott Yenor, Paul Bailey and Chris Young.
Kissel was rejected by the Senate Appropriations Committee on Higher Education, 5-1, yesterday. Gates failed to show up. The governor’s office has not submitted the applications of Yenor, Bailey and Young to the Florida Senate for approval.
Gates’ application to be considered is dated Jan. 22, 2025. Read Garcia, R. Gates 2025-3050
My public record request for Yenor’s application has not been fulfilled – it’s over 60 days old.

Thank you Rick. How long will this dystopian nightmare continue before more good people wake the hell up and start protesting this evil.
We don’t need the crazies who were crazy before, and will always be crazy, to uncrazy. That’s not necessary, and it ain’t ever gonna happen, anyway.
What we need is for all the good, normal people–who are the greater percentage of people here–who now KNOW that our state’s democracy is being dismantled to raise their voices and call it out for what it is.
So many don’t want to do that, for fear of losing the benefits of keeping their mouths shut. What they can’t seem to grasp from history is that the steady creep of tyranny will land on their own doorsteps. Whether it’s sooner or later, the hour will come.
When process and the rule of law is disregarded for particular sets of circumstances and people, with those in the ruling majority looking the other way, make no mistake there is one end to it: an autocracy that operates according to process and a rule of law for no one. There is no such thing as being in the “winner’s circle” when the ruins of a democracy start raining down on everyone’s heads, and we’re closer to that point every day.
So whatever the short- and long-term UWF outcomes of this cartoonesque but deadly lame duck and his band of goon mercenaries, maybe you inspired a few more people to Say The Thing with this post, Rick. God knows it’s way past time for people who are both rational and moral to start bringing those traits to bear in meaningful ways.
It isn’t that hard to start putting the statement “This is not right” into action–and not just in private conversations, but in *public*. Far better to suffer the potential consequences of speaking the truth now, than to save your voice for begging to have the boot taken off your own neck, and the necks of your children, later on.
However many people may find this an exaggeration, the situation really is that serious. Despots always have to take over the schools and turn them into propaganda machines for their corrupt state; what we’re seeing is nothing new. DeSantis certainly knows what he’s up to with his coup on UWF; even his dim-bulb bag men understand what goal their slavish placeholding is meant to achieve for the despot they serve. If you also understand what he’s up to, but you aren’t doing anything to stop it, you yourself are a big part of the problem. Please start speaking up.
