UWF will have its offer before CMPA

The University of West Florida offer appears to be very similar to one being discussed by the master developer and university during the holidays. The master developer had already offered to reduce the size of the commercial building. The marine research had been discussed as being adjacent to the museum –sort of a living, hands-on exhibit. Now UWF has it separate, closer to the Crab Trap and BDI office–which actually makes sense because boat storage near the public park area seemed to be a waste.

A couple points that should be overlooked:
-While UWF claims the Community Maritime Park is becoming too commercial, it is the lease fees on the commercial parts that helps pay for the maintenance and operation of the entire park….also creates jobs. The commercial element also keeps park vibrant after the museum closes for the day.
-UWF has only raised $4.5 million for the museum – $2.25 million is from Quint & Rishy Studer. The Switzer family is the other large donor.
-UWF also gets $13+ million through the City for building the museum.
-Once the CMPA votes on the UWF plan. It still goes before the Pensacola City Council for approval…so Friday’s vote isn’t the final step.
