Video Slots may be coming to Florida

But not at Pensacola Greyhound Track.

Under a bill that passed a House committee Monday, these parimutuel facilities would be allowed to have Class II slot machines (Video slots):

• Flagler Dog Track, Miami

• Calder Race Course, Miami

• Miami Jai Alai, Miami

• Palm Beach Kennel Club, West Palm Beach

• Jacksonville Kennel Club, Orange Park

• Tampa Bay Downs, Oldsmar

• Tampa Greyhound Track, Tampa

• Derby Lane Greyhound Racing, St. Petersburg

• Naples Fort Meyers Greyhound Track, Bonita Springs

The bill also would allow the machines at Hialeah Race Course if the facility regains its racing license.

An estimated $1 billion that would be raised from those nine facilites. The bills call for the tax revenues from the slots to be sent to school districts across the state, which would then have to reduce property tax rates.

According to supporters, taxpayers could see savings of about 10 to 20 percent on the school portion of their property tax bill.

Will local churches who pressured the county commission not to allow a poker room at the local dogtrack also push to have the Escambia County school district not accept the “ill-gotten” gains from gambling elsewhere?
