Walton County gets biodiesel plant

Walton County Commission voted to approve a contract for Gulf Coast Energy Inc. to an ethanol and biodiesel plant in Mossy Head that will be the nation’s first facility to produce both fuels at the same site.

The plant will use rendered chicken fat and soybean oil to make biodiesel, according to Gulf Coast Energy’s state grant application. Instead of corn, any wood waste can be used to make ethanol at the facility. The plant will initially employ about 50 people. The number of jobs should jump to about 150 after three years.

Ten years, there would be no way that Escambia County would lose such a facility to Walton County.
