The local ABC affiliate reported last night on the investigation of the possible sexual assault at Tate High School. Two students have been suspended. The alleged crime happened on Tuesday, March 1, but the students weren’t suspended until Friday, March 4. See video.
There is no mention of whether the Tate High principals and his administrators are also under investigation by Superintendent Malcolm Thomas or the State Attorney’s Office for failure to report the incident to law enforcement. In 1997, PHS principal Horace Jones was removed from his position when a similar incident involving eight athletes happened on his campus.
In April 1996, eight Pensacola High School football players being arrested on charges of getting oral sex in a stadium locker room from a 15-year-old who had been enrolled in special-education classes. All are charged with lewd and lascivious assault on a child younger than 16. The alleged assault took place during school hours. A grand jury also wrote a report on the handling of the matter by school officials, including principal Horace Jones, who waited a month, after the football team went to the playoffs, before reporting it to police.
