Weekend buzz: DOJ, jail tax and reality tv on the beach

Week of Reckoning on the Jail
The U.S. Department of Justice is coming to town to inspect the Escambia County Jail. This will be their first visit since the Board of County Commissioners took over the jail and began its negotiations over the DOJ report that was released last spring.

We are hearing that county staff is now trying to figure how to pay for mandated personnel and other changes at the facility. One idea being kicked around is a jail tax (similar to what the county now does for fire protection and the library system).

‘Party Down South’ wants to come to Pensacola Beach
CMT new reality show ‘Party Down South’ has begun planning its second season and they are exploring Pensacola Beach as the new locale. The show, which is produced by the same people who brought the world ‘Jersey Shore,’ is the redneck version of the MTV ‘Real World’ series.

Here is the description of the current season:

Follow eight young, brazen adults for one wild summer of extreme fun. Their summer vacation spot, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, may never be the same after these fast friends work, party and bond with one another over their common love of the South.

In our 2010 April’s Fools issue, we joked that ‘Jersey Shore’ was coming to Pensacola Beach. It looks like we weren’t too far off.
