The Escambia County School District has 475 portables that have 3,487 student stations, according to documents received by the IN via a public information request. It has another 259 modular buildings on its school campuses with 2,718 student stations. Total non-permanent buildings on school campuses: 734 Â Â Â Student work stations: 6,205 (15.3% of total enrollment)

Most school boards would look at replacing these structures with more permanent structures – rather than spending $21 million on a school for less than 400 students.

Most of the portables and modular buildings at elementary schools are on the west side of the School District. The schools in predominantly white neighborhoods in east Pensacola don’t have the enrollment issues as the rest of the district and have only 18 such structures. In 2007, the School District had as a priority building a new K-8 school on the west side, but that doesn’t appear be a priority any more.
