The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Skanska USA’s attempt to limit liability after its barges broke loose and damaged the Pensacola Bay Bridge during Hurricane Sally in 2020. Locals consider the 40-page decision a victory for those who have filed lawsuits in state courts against the construction company. Some of the lawsuits involve property damaged by the barges, but the majority of the cases are businesses, such as Bagelheads, Flowers by Yoko and Dog House Deli, that claim economic damages due to the bridge’s closure.

The first Pensacola Chapter of the American Aviation Historical Society will hold its inaugural meeting on August 10, 2023, at the Oaks Restaurant (Top Side)-NAS Golf Course. The meeting will begin at 12:00 pm and will include a buffet lunch and a presentation by the Director of the National Naval Aviation Museum, Captain Sterling Gilliam. Cost: $20 (including lunch and presentation).

Covenant Care is opening their first children’s grief house to continue their 40-year legacy of community service and support for children and teens experiencing grief in Northwest Florida. Nonie’s Place on North Palafox Street provides a centralized location for Covenant Care to continue their current programs and services for children and families experiencing the loss of a loved one and help provide the care these children need to process their grief. The Florida Public Archaeology Network, a program of the University of West Florida, has received a $99,968 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Estuarine Research Reserve System Science Collaborative. The grant funds the project “People of the Apalachicola Region: Exploring cultural heritage as a vector for ecosystem planning, management and adaptation.” Nicole Grinnan has the details.
