For the first half of this year and much of last, illegal immigrants were a big issue for Republicans. Some believe Sheriff Wendell Hall can credit his raids on undocumented workers as one of the keys to his primary victory.
However at the Republican National Convention the immigration issue was barely mentioned. Why?
Because John McCain has a more liberal approach to the issue. In 2007, McCain co-sponsored a bill with Democrats Harry Reid and Patrick Leahy that would have overhauled the nation’s immigration rules by creating a temporary worker program, a “pathway to citizenship†for illegal workers already here and provisions to tighten border security.
GOP senators killed it by introducing amendments that ultimately led to the bill’s demise.
