Work, It’s For the Dogs

The Escambia County Commission will consider this week if two contract kennel technician positions should be changed from contract to full-time jobs.

Currently the county uses contractual labor to perform various work. It has had difficulty securing such labor when it comes to work at the county animal shelter.

Because the kennel technician jobs are left unfilled, the animal shelter has relied on paying employees overtime and utilizing prison road crews. Staff estimates that the overtime costs exceed the incremental increase in costs associated with converting the positions to full-time.

If converted, the full-time positions would be funded with $40,719 from the contractual services account in the existing animal shelter budget, as well as an additional $29,265 from reserves.
