The new Escambia County Firefighters Union is questioning Escambia County’s volunteer departments, alleging doubtful certification and misuse of tax money. This week’s Independent News reports the Union has filed such a report to county officials. The report contends the volunteer firefighters have been paid much more than the allowed monthly stipend, and that only about one-fourth of them have undergone state-mandated training. The I-N also reports an audit of the possible illegal payments is being conducted by the county, and is expected to be completed by July.
