The Pensacola Humane Society is struggling to pay staff and care for its animals, according to a report by the PNJ’s Tom McLaughlin that was posted online late Friday.
Despite claims by board members that the nonprofit was financially sound, McLaughlin reports that it had to open an emergency line of credit to obtain $20,000 needed to cover basic expenses.
Ten days ago, Inweekly received an anonymous email alleging mismanagement at the Pensacola Humane Society. The authors wouldn’t return our requests for more information, but we were told that the board was meeting with the staff on Monday, Dec. 12.
PNJ received a recording of the meeting. Board Treasurer Barbara admitted that its finances “weren’t going as well as they should” and that its cash had been depleted. depleted. However, board member Hank Gonzales denied any funds had been misappropriated.
The interim director told the PNJ that she was unable to access the Louie’s Love Fund, a program set up with a $30,000 donation from the Chadbourne Foundation, even though the books should it had $3,700 in the fund. She had to use her personal credit card to provide emergency services.
