In October 2001, we asked readers to submit their entries about what they believe makes Pensacola unique. Their entries needed to begin with “You are so Pensacola if…”
We ran the contest annually for three years, and sadly, the entries became very similar. A few readers tried to resubmit entries from the previous entries.
Some of my favorites were:
You are so Pensacola if…
- You think sunshine, moonshine, and monkeyshine all mean the same thing.
- You call everyone sweetie, darlin’, and honey instead of their names.
- You know how to pronounce “Texar.”
- You have seen your cousin on “Blue Lights TV.”
Several entries involved history, such as:
- the McGuire’s original location
- favorite sandwich at Al’s Castle Bar
- Bayou Chico Drawbridge and the name of the strip club on the Pensacola side.
So we have devised the ‘You Are So Pensacola’ Quiz – Five Rounds. No prizes exist, but you can brag to your friends on social media.
ROUND ONE:
Name five stores – retail, restaurant, or bar in the two blocks of South Palafox Street – between Garden and Intendencia -that no longer exist. Must have at least one answer that closed in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

ROUND TWO goes live at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. This will get more difficult.
Dig Deeper: The story behind the cover that Tony Baker is the issue came out months after Escambia County Commissioner W.D. Childers (a relative of Bruce Childers) and three other commissioners were indicted and removed from office. Childers (W.D., not Bruce) was charged with Sunshine Law violations, money laundering, and bribery.
In June 2002, Childers (see above) was convicted on one count of violating Sunshine Law over a call he and Commissioner Terry Smith made to Supervisor of Elections Bonnie Jones over country redistricting. Meanwhile, Commissioner Willer Junior pleaded no contest to 10 felony charges and one misdemeanor charge relating to misdeeds committed during his tenure as commissioner. Junior agreed to testify against Childers (see above).
So many “You are so Pensacola” entries involved Childers (see above) that we decided to put him on the cover.
